The Garden Club of Houston
The Garden Club of Houston has been a major force in stimulating the knowledge and love of gardening in our community since its organization in 1924 by seven enthusiastic ladies interested in horticulture, conservation and civic beautification. In 1932, we became a member of the Garden Club of America and joined their efforts at improving our nation’s environment. Through lectures, fund raisers and active participation in community environmental and conservation activities, we continue to bolster these ideals and improvements in our city. Our club and its members have been recognized with many GCA awards for these efforts over the years.
In the fall of 1942, The Garden Club of Houston established its first Bulb Mart, introducing many new plants and bulbs to the Houston area. Now known as The Bulb and Plant Mart, this event offers bulbs and plants of horticultural merit to our community for sale. Experts share gardening tips and advice and The Bulb and Plant Mart Horticultural Guide is given free of charge to everyone who attends the Mart. Proceeds from this event are donated to many worthwhile gardening efforts in Houston and plants are given to a number of civic locations and area schools.
Proceeds from these fundraising events allow The Garden Club of Houston to maintain the gardens at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston at Bissonnet and The Museum’s Rienzi house gardens; the Houston Hospice at the Texas Medical Center and Texas Medical Center Park. In addition, we contribute to the work at the Cockrell Butterfly Center at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, support an internship at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, and contribute to a Houston area school garden through Urban Harvest. Through our Community Grants, we have supported numerous additional worthwhile horticultural, conservation and civic beautification projects every year in Houston.
The Garden Club of Houston offers lectures that are free and open to the public including The Nancy Stallworth Thomas Horticulture Lecture, and The Julia Wallace Flower Arranging Lecture. In the last several years, we have published two cookbooks featuring favorite recipes of our members.
